Welcome to the ultimate guide to the subsystems of language! This guide is intended for students beginning VCE English Language but can be read and comprehended by anyone wanting to learn. The purpose of the guide is to give you an introduction to the different subsystems of language by giving you information and examples on different aspects of each subsystem.

But first, and introduction into what the subsystems of language actually are.

The language subsystems are one of the most important parts of linguistics. They allow us to communicate with others, convey information and express our feelings and emotions. If we didn’t have the subsystems, language would be nothing.

There are 6 main language subsystems that we will be reading about:

• Phonology (the organisation of sounds in language)

• Morphology (how words are structured)

• Lexicology (the catergorisation of words)

​

• Syntax (how structure sentences)

​​

• Semantics (the meaning behind language

​

• Discourse Analysis (language above the level of a sentence)
